A loan helped to resume operations and serve borrowers whose livelihoods have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis in Costa Rica.

Edesa's story

EDESA funds activities ranging from agriculture and cattle farming to tourism and retail to small restaurants and tailoring shops. Geographically, EDESA works in more than 100 rural communities in all regions of Costa Rica.

Like many businesses around the world, EDESA is unable to operate normally as a result of the crisis. Costa Rica has taken significant measures to reduce the spread of COVD-19, such as restricting movement and only allowing essential businesses to operate. These measures have strongly affected the economy. For example, the closure of beaches and national parks have dramatically affected the tourism sector, where more than 200,000 jobs have been affected.

Due to the economic disruption, EDESA will reschedule many of its Kiva borrowers' loans. By supporting this loan, you're helping EDESA to weather this crisis and be in a position to continue to serve their coffee farmers, young entrepreneurs, economic migrants, and many other clients in the aftermath of the pandemic.

This loan is part of Kiva’s Crisis Support Loan program to assist our Field Partner organizations directly so they can continue to support our borrowers. Because it is part of a pilot program, this loan may have higher risk. Read more in the "More about this loan" section below.
